ANTARCTICA FUN FACTS -- In winter, sea ice up to 10 ft thick forms outward from the coast in a belt up to 1000 miles wide, covering 8 million square miles (more than the continent itself). At it summer minimum the sea ice occupies 1 million square miles; the 8 fold annual variation has enormous effects on marine life and climate. (Source: NSF Antarctic Program brochur#00-146).
